Pink saris are worn by a group of women vigilantes from the lowest social class in Northern India, who under Sampat Pal’s leadership take the law into their own hands, especially in cases of the domestic abuse of women – often perpetrated by their husbands' extended families, with whom they are forced to live. Sampat endured a similar fate when she was married as a young girl into a family which beat her often, but she fought back, leaving her in-laws and eventually becoming famous as a champion for beleaguered women and their rights
