Shinjuku Boys is a documentary about a group of people who were assigned the female gender at birth, but identify more closely with the male gender. The film follows the lives of three transsexuals working in a Tokyo nightclub where all the employees are women who have chosen to live as men. Many of the boys have brief and mostly platonic relationships with girls that visit the club, but most of these girls eventually prefer a socially accepted marriage with a ‘real’ man. Alternating with the fabulous sequences shot inside the club are interviews with the documentary’s three main subjects, in which they talk candidly about their lives, relationships and fears.
