Misselwitz gives a voice to those who were asked to remain silent. In this miraculously beautiful 35mm road movie-documentary she travels with a train through East Germany shortly before the collapse of the GDR meeting different women with whom she talks about life and its hardships. In getting closer to the women the film makes us feel their struggles and hopes like few other films ever managed subtly questioning official images of women claimed by the state. There is a firm belief in the eyes of Misselwitz’s protagonists of different ages and backgrounds that cinema can help them. For the beginning, the act of listening to them is already a step towards emancipation.
